Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup fresh blueberries about 50g, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger finely grated and peeled
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1-2 teaspoons maple syrup or simple syrup to taste
  • 4-5 ounces sparkling water or club soda chilled
  • ice crushed or cubes
  • mint sprig or lemon wheel for garnish (optional)

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or sturdy glass
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer (optional)

Method

  1. In a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker, add fresh blueberries and grated ginger.
  2. Using a muddler or back of a wooden spoon, gently crush the berries and ginger together until blueberries release their juice and ginger becomes fragrant.
  3. Add fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of sweetener (maple syrup or simple syrup).
  4. Add ice and either shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds or stir thoroughly to chill the mixture.
  5. Optional: Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into your serving glass.
  6. Fill the glass with fresh ice and top with chilled sparkling water.
  7. Give a gentle stir and taste. Add remaining teaspoon of syrup if needed for sweetness.
  8. Garnish with extra blueberries and optional mint sprig or lemon wheel.

Notes

You can use frozen blueberries instead of fresh - just thaw them first. For make-ahead prep, create a blueberry-ginger syrup by simmering the ingredients together, then strain and chill. The drink can be made alcoholic by adding a splash of vodka or gin. Serve immediately while bubbly for best results.
