Method
- In a sturdy glass or cocktail shaker, add fresh blueberries and grated ginger.
- Using a muddler or back of a wooden spoon, gently crush the berries and ginger together until blueberries release their juice and ginger becomes fragrant.
- Add fresh lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of sweetener (maple syrup or simple syrup).
- Add ice and either shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds or stir thoroughly to chill the mixture.
- Optional: Strain the mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into your serving glass.
- Fill the glass with fresh ice and top with chilled sparkling water.
- Give a gentle stir and taste. Add remaining teaspoon of syrup if needed for sweetness.
- Garnish with extra blueberries and optional mint sprig or lemon wheel.
Notes
You can use frozen blueberries instead of fresh - just thaw them first. For make-ahead prep, create a blueberry-ginger syrup by simmering the ingredients together, then strain and chill. The drink can be made alcoholic by adding a splash of vodka or gin. Serve immediately while bubbly for best results.
