Ingredients

  • 6 slices thick-cut turkey bacon chopped
  • 1 medium onion finely diced
  • 3 15 oz cans baked beans undrained
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika optional
  • to taste salt and black pepper

Equipment

  • Large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven
  • 9x13 baking dish (if not using oven-safe skillet)
  • Slotted spoon

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, cook chopped turkey bacon over medium heat until crisp. Remove bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving about 1 tablespoon of fat in the pan.
  3. Add diced onion to the pan and sauté for 3-4 minutes until softened and slightly golden.
  4. Add baked beans, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, molasses, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, and half of the cooked bacon. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Stir until well combined.
  6. If not using an oven-safe skillet, transfer mixture to a 9x13 baking dish.
  7. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes until bubbling and slightly thickened.
  8. Top with remaining bacon pieces during the last few minutes of baking.

Notes

These beans can be made ahead and reheated. For a vegetarian version, omit the bacon and add liquid smoke for that smoky flavor. Maple syrup can be used instead of molasses for a different sweetness profile. The recipe is very forgiving and can be adjusted to taste. Perfect for making ahead for potlucks or BBQs.
