Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 can condensed cheddar cheese soup (10.5 oz)
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese divided
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 bag frozen French fries (20-22 oz, crinkle-cut or shoestring)
Optional Toppings
  • chopped pickles
  • diced tomatoes
  • shredded lettuce
  • extra ketchup or mustard for drizzling

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • 9x13-inch baking dish

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown ground beef with diced onion over medium heat for 5-7 minutes until beef is no longer pink and onions have softened. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in minced garlic, salt, black pepper, ketchup, and yellow mustard.
  4. Add condensed cheddar cheese soup and ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until creamy and well-combined.
  5. Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, spreading evenly.
  6. Arrange frozen French fries on top of the beef mixture.
  7. Sprinkle with remaining ½ cup cheddar cheese and the mozzarella cheese.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until fries are crispy and cheese is melted and golden.
  9. Let cool slightly before adding optional toppings if desired.

Notes

You can customize this recipe with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter version. The cheddar soup can be substituted with cream of mushroom soup plus extra cheese. Sweet potato fries or tater tots work well as alternatives to regular fries. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for best results to maintain fry crispiness.
