Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread or Italian bread sliced in half lengthwise
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened (1 stick)
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • 0.5 cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped, plus more for garnish
  • 0.5 teaspoon dried oregano optional
  • 1 pinch salt

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or foil
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  2. In a bowl, combine softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, dried oregano (if using), and salt. Mix until smooth.
  3. Spread the garlic butter mixture generously across both cut surfaces of the bread.
  4. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella and grated Parmesan evenly over both buttered halves.
  5. Bake for 12-15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Switch oven to broil for 1-2 minutes to achieve a golden brown top. Watch carefully to prevent burning.
  7. Garnish with additional chopped parsley and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, use freshly grated cheese instead of pre-shredded for better melting. The bread can be customized with different cheese combinations like provolone or cheddar. Fresh herbs can be substituted - try rosemary or basil instead of parsley. For a spicy version, add red pepper flakes before baking. Leftovers can be reheated in the oven for best results.
