Ingredients

For the Mug Cake
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/4 cup milk any kind
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or melted butter
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon chocolate chips optional

Equipment

  • Microwave-safe mug (12–16 oz)
  • Fork
  • Microwave

Method

  1. In a large microwave-safe mug (12–16 oz), combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix well with a fork until everything is evenly blended.
  2. Pour in the milk, vegetable oil or melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir just until the mixture is smooth and no dry flour remains, taking care not to overmix.
  3. Fold in the chocolate chips, if using.
  4. Microwave on high for 60–90 seconds (for a 1000W microwave), until the edge is set but the center looks slightly moist. The cake will finish cooking as it cools.
  5. Allow the mug cake to cool for 1–2 minutes before eating. Add your favorite toppings such as ice cream, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar if you wish.

Notes

Mug cakes are best enjoyed right after cooking while the texture is soft and moist. If you need to store leftovers, cover the mug and keep it at room temperature for up to 1 day or refrigerate for up to 2 days; reheat briefly in the microwave before serving. Adjust the microwave time depending on your oven wattage—cook less for higher wattage or more for lower—and always use a large enough mug to prevent overflow. For a richer dessert, fold in additional chocolate chips, nuts, or other mix-ins, and finish with your preferred toppings.
