Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup lump or claw crab meat well-drained and picked over
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • 8 oz cream cheese softened
  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 1 green onion thinly sliced, plus more for garnish
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese or Monterey Jack
  • salt and black pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • 1-1½ quart baking dish
  • Electric mixer

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 1 to 1½ quart baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until completely smooth and free of lumps.
  3. Stir in the sour cream, Worcestershire sauce, fresh lemon juice, and garlic powder until well combined.
  4. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  5. Gently fold in the crab meat, shredded mozzarella cheese, and sliced green onion, being careful to preserve the chunks of crab.
  6. Spread the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until hot and bubbling around the edges.
  8. Optional: Switch to broil for 1-2 minutes to create browned spots on top, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  9. Remove from oven and garnish with additional sliced green onions.
  10. Serve warm with crispy wonton chips, pita chips, baguette slices, or fresh vegetables for dipping.

Notes

For the best flavor, use fresh or pasteurized refrigerated crab meat rather than canned or imitation crab. If using canned, drain thoroughly and pat dry with paper towels to prevent a watery dip.
Make-ahead tip: Assemble up to 24 hours in advance, cover, refrigerate, and add 3-5 extra minutes to the baking time.
Try customizing with a drizzle of sweet chili sauce, a sprinkle of Old Bay seasoning, or add minced jalapeño for a spicy kick.
