Ingredients

  • 1 beef roast (chuck or round)
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 4 tablespoons dry mustard
  • minced garlic to taste
  • 1 onion chopped
  • garlic powder for gravy
  • Worcestershire sauce for gravy
  • Bisto gravy powder for thickening

Equipment

  • Slow cooker/Crock pot
  • Saucepan
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the dry mustard, softened butter, and minced garlic to create a paste.
  2. With clean hands, spread this mixture all over the beef roast, ensuring every surface is covered.
  3. Scatter chopped onion in the bottom of your slow cooker to create a flavorful bed.
  4. Place the mustard-slathered roast on top of the onions.
  5. Sprinkle the white sugar over the roast.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the meat reaches your desired tenderness.
  7. Once the roast is done, transfer the cooking liquids to a saucepan.
  8. Add garlic powder and Worcestershire sauce to taste to enhance the savory notes.
  9. Whisk in Bisto gravy powder and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  10. Slice or shred the roast and serve with the gravy.

Notes

For best results, choose a roast with good marbling as the fat will melt during cooking and keep everything moist and flavorful. If you don't have Bisto gravy powder, you can substitute with cornstarch or flour mixed with cold water. The sugar creates a lovely caramelization that balances the savory elements perfectly.
This roast pairs wonderfully with creamy mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, or a crusty bread to soak up the delicious gravy. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and make excellent sandwiches.
