Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (450g) halal
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded (or mix of cheddar & mozzarella)
  • 1 can refrigerated pizza dough or crescent dough sheet
  • 3 tablespoons butter melted
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Large skillet
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Sharp knife
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Brown the ground beef with diced onion in a skillet over medium heat until thoroughly cooked.
  2. Add minced garlic, salt, and black pepper to the meat mixture. Stir in ketchup and yellow mustard, cooking for another 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat.
  3. Roll out the refrigerated pizza dough into a rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  4. Spread the beef mixture evenly across the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. Sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the beef layer.
  6. Starting at the long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log shape.
  7. Slice the log into 1 to 1.5 inch thick pieces.
  8. Place rollups on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  9. Combine melted butter with garlic powder and brush over the rollups.
  10. Bake until golden brown and cooked through.
  11. Optional: Sprinkle with dried parsley before serving.

Notes

These rollups can be made ahead and easily reheated. Feel free to substitute the ground beef with turkey or chicken for a lighter version. The cheese can be varied - try pepper jack for heat or Swiss for a different flavor. You can also add diced vegetables like bell peppers or mushrooms to the filling. Leftovers store well and make great lunch box additions.
