Method
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef and grated onions. Add salt, crushed dried marjoram, and pepper. Mix thoroughly but gently to avoid tough patties.
- Divide the meat mixture into six equal portions and shape into oval patties approximately ¾-inch thick.
- Position oven rack about 3 inches from heat source and preheat broiler.
- Place patties under the broiler for 3-4 minutes until browned on top. Carefully flip and broil for another 4 minutes or until desired doneness is reached.
- While patties are cooking, prepare the mushroom gravy mix according to package directions.
- Stir the drained sliced mushrooms into the gravy. Add red wine if using, and heat through.
- Pour the mushroom gravy over the cooked patties and allow them to sit in the gravy for 1-2 minutes before serving.
- Serve hot with mashed potatoes for the perfect comfort meal.
Notes
For best results, don't overwork the meat mixture when forming the patties as this can make them tough. If you prefer fresh mushrooms over canned, simply sauté about 8 ounces of sliced mushrooms before adding them to the gravy. This dish reheats beautifully, making it perfect for meal prep—store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For a complete meal, serve with mashed potatoes and a green vegetable like buttered green beans or glazed carrots.
