Ingredients

  • 1 Apple thinly sliced
  • 4 cups Apple cider
  • 2 Cinnamon sticks
  • Lemon juice or light corn syrup for moistening glass rims
  • Red sugar for rimming glasses
  • Splash of lemon juice or maple syrup optional
  • Whole cloves or orange peel optional garnish

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Shallow saucers
  • Slow cooker (optional)

Method

  1. Pour the apple cider into a medium saucepan and add the cinnamon sticks. Heat over medium heat until steaming but not boiling, about 8-10 minutes.
  2. While the cider warms, prepare the glasses. Pour a small amount of lemon juice or light corn syrup into a shallow saucer. Fill another saucer with red sugar.
  3. Dip the rim of each glass first into the liquid, then immediately into the red sugar, giving a gentle twist to ensure even coverage. Set aside for 1-2 minutes to dry.
  4. Once the cider is warmed through and fragrant, remove the cinnamon sticks (you can save them for garnish if desired).
  5. Carefully ladle the hot cider into the prepared glasses and float a few thin apple slices on top of each drink.

Notes

For parties, keep the cider warm in a slow cooker set to "Warm" and create a rim-decorating station nearby so guests can customize their own drinks. For an adult version, offer bourbon, spiced rum, or brandy on the side that guests can add to taste. The cider can be customized with a caramel drizzle, chai spices, or even cranberry juice for different variations. Leftover cider can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently before serving.
