Ingredients
  

  • 5 medium strawberries hulled, plus extra slice for garnish
  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves plus small sprig for garnish
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • ½-1 ounce simple syrup or honey/agave to taste
  • 3-4 ounces sparkling water chilled
  • ice crushed or cubes

  • Cocktail shaker or sturdy glass
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer (optional)

Method
 

  1. Add hulled strawberries and basil leaves to a cocktail shaker or sturdy glass.
  2. Muddle the strawberries and basil until the strawberries release their juice and the basil becomes fragrant.
  3. Add lemon juice and simple syrup to the muddled mixture.
  4. Fill shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds until well-chilled and combined.
  5. Strain mixture into an ice-filled glass (use fine-mesh strainer if preferred).
  6. Top with chilled sparkling water.
  7. Garnish with a fresh strawberry slice and basil sprig.

Notes

For extra herbal flavor, try using basil-infused simple syrup. The drink can be customized with variations like adding a splash of balsamic vinegar, using lime instead of lemon, or substituting ginger beer for sparkling water. For a frozen version, blend all ingredients with ice. Quality fresh strawberries and basil are key to the best flavor. Adjust sweetness to taste.
