Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon flour for coating the oven bag
  • 2 packages turkey gravy mix 7/8 ounce each
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 4 pounds turkey breast fresh preferred
  • 2 onions peeled and quartered
  • vegetable oil for brushing the turkey
  • salt and pepper to taste

Equipment

  • Oven cooking bag
  • 13x9x2 inch baking pan
  • Meat thermometer

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of flour to the oven cooking bag and shake to coat the inside. This prevents the bag from bursting and helps thicken the gravy.
  3. Place the floured bag in a 13x9x2 inch baking pan.
  4. Add the turkey gravy mix packets and water directly into the bag. Gently squeeze to combine the mixture.
  5. Brush the turkey breast with vegetable oil and season generously with salt and pepper.
  6. Place the seasoned turkey breast into the prepared bag, then arrange the quartered onions around it.
  7. Seal the bag with the nylon tie and cut six half-inch slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Tuck the ends of the bag into the pan.
  8. Bake for 1¼ to 2 hours, until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part reads 170°F.
  9. Once done, let the turkey rest in the bag for 10 minutes before opening and serving.
  10. Slice the turkey and serve with the onion-infused gravy that has formed in the bag.

Notes

For best results, use a fresh turkey breast rather than frozen, though either will work well. If using frozen, ensure it's completely thawed before cooking.
If you're sensitive to sodium, look for low-sodium gravy mix options as the packaged mixes can sometimes be quite salty.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. The turkey makes excellent sandwiches the next day!
