Ingredients

  • 3 medium sweet onions (preferably Vidalia) peeled and sliced into ¼-inch rings
  • 4 tablespoons halal butter melted
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese grated
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon dried oregano optional
  • to taste salt and freshly ground black pepper

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Knife

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the sliced onion rings evenly in the prepared baking dish, separating the rings slightly.
  3. Drizzle melted butter over the onion rings, ensuring even coverage.
  4. Season with garlic powder, paprika, oregano (if using), salt, and pepper.
  5. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese evenly over the top.
  6. Bake uncovered for 30-35 minutes, until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  7. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, use fresh Vidalia onions and grate your own cheese rather than using pre-shredded varieties - it melts better without anti-caking agents. While halal butter is specified, regular unsalted butter works fine if dietary restrictions aren't a concern. The dish can be customized with different cheese combinations or by adding mushrooms or bell peppers between the onion layers. Perfect alongside grilled meats, roasted chicken, or as a topping for burgers.
